William Barbini

William (Bill) Barbini is an American violinist, violist, educator, and conductor. He received his diploma from Juilliard School in 1970, studying with Ivan Galamian, Paul Makanowitzky among others. He thereafter became one of the youngest members selected into the first violin section of New York Philharmonic where he had the opportunity to work with the world’s greatest conductors including Leonard Bernstein, Pierre Boulez, Rafael Kubelík, and Zubin Mehta, and performed twice as soloist. During his tenure with the NY Philharmonic, Barbini also performed with the Gramercy String Quartet. With Barbini as principal, the Gramercy was commissioned by Pierre Boulez for a number of pre-concert performances at Avery Fisher Hall. While in New York, Barbini also served as concertmaster for the Joffrey Ballet and soloist with the Festival Orchestra at the Norwalk Performing Arts Festival.

In 1983, Mr. Barbini was appointed concertmaster of the Sacramento Symphony where he appeared 13 times performing nearly all of the major Violin Concertos. His numerous other solo appearances include a tour of Austria and Germany, performing Beethoven Concerto with Tonkünstler Orchestra, and with Monterey Symphony where he served as Concertmaster for eight years,  and as concertmaster of the Ariel Ensemble. Barbini was also concertmaster for Chico Symphony, Pro Art Symphony and Classical Philharmonic. In addition to a lifelong collaboration with the violinist Kineko Okumura, Barbini has performed in recitals worldwide, and in concerto performances with the San Francisco Ballet Orchestra, Niagara Falls Philharmonic, and Lancaster Symphony Orchestra.

Chamber music has been a focus of Barbini’s career. He has performed with the Philharmonia Quartet, Balihry Piano Trio, San Francisco Contemporary Players and Music Now.  He has also been serving as music director of the Chamber Music Society of Sacramento till this day. His recent performances included collaborations with Jon Nakamatsu, Rachel Barton Pine, and Helene Wickett.

As a dedicated teacher, Mr. Barbini joined the Sacramento State University music department in 1984. He has also served on the faculty of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and maintained a busy schedule at his own teaching studio. Mr. Barbini is also a regular guest at international music festivals, including the Pacific Music Festival, Festival of New American Music, Festival de San Miguel Allende, the Other Minds Festival, and the Interharmony International Music Festival.
