Sophie Zhang

Fifteen-year-old violinist Sophie Zhang is a sophomore at Davis Senior High School and a student of William Barbini at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music in the Pre-college Division. She is also a first violinist in the San Francisco Symphony Youth Orchestra (SFSYO). Her orchestral experiences started with the Sacramento Youth Symphony (SYS), where she appeared as soloist twice as the concerto competition winner. She also played with the Camellia Symphony for a year and was the concert mistress of Holmes Jr High Advanced Orchestra. Her other concerto performances include the SYS Summer Chamber Music Workshop Orchestra and the CMTANC Orchestra.

Sophie has won first place in many music competitions, including the Pacific Music Society Competition (2017) and CMTANC United States International Music Competition (2017). She is also an avid chamber musician. Her chamber groups have been coached by William Barbini, Susan Lamb Cook, and members of the Telegraph Quartet. Her groups have won prizes in the Sacramento Chamber Music Society Competition and the Sacramento State University Chamber Music Competition, and have performed in the Westminster Church concert series, MTAC Memorial Scholarship Recital, and the Great Composers Chamber Music Series at the Harris Center, among many other venues.

Sophie has enjoyed spending summers with her friends at Music by the Sea and mentoring young musicians at the SYS Summer Chamber Music Workshop. She attended Boston University Tanglewood Institute and the Interharmony International Music Festival at Acqui Terme, Italy, in the summer of 2018 and is looking forward to touring Europe with the SFSYO this coming summer.

Aside from music, Sophie enjoys reading, drawing, playing tennis and ping pong, origami, and speed solving Rubik’s cubes.
